History of Religions--under a hood of academic color. This link is established to continue, in retirement, my forty-plus years of study and university teaching. It is expected slowly to outgrow the other two hoods of the Institute. This page includes a "Personal Bibliography" that provides preliminary information about the author’s past efforts. It also suggests patterns and intentions for research in the future.

Expansion Tectonics--under Mount Hood. This mountain is a volcano in the North-American Cascades, situated south of the Columbia River Gorge. It is grouped among a few others of its kind and has been erupting from amidst a gigantic ancient lava bed that, 16.5 million years ago, began flowing forth from under what became the Rocky Mountains. These lavas broke forth because excess magma underneath the flattening Canadian Shield and the Great Plains, resulting from the planet’s overall expansion and implicit surface flattening, was being squeezed outward to lift up peripheral mountain ranges for the North American continent. Expansion Tectonics is a theory that views these and other geological events in a larger unified evolutionary perspective. For instance, the thought that our earthquakes are being caused by the subduction of ocean-floor plates, underneath the peripheries of the continents, is an unproven hypothesis that has been inherited from the Twentieth Century. There is no proof of such subduction.

Reflections and Refractions, or, "Pebbles and Apples from along the Road to Heaven." Into the hood above Mount Hood, pebbles and ashes are thrown when every few centuries or so the volcano feels exuberant. On a more regular schedule, clouds become visible when moist and warmer air from the Pacific is driven skyward to be cooled. Their moisture supports fruit orchards beneath. Contemplating the hood above Mount Hood occasionally will give rise to musings about situations that cannot easily be classified under the two other hoods. For instance, while under the Second Hood "pebbles" pertain to geology, here they may be seen picked up and thrown from various motivations; or, they may be mailed as greeting cards among friends.
